Help Save Children’s Resale
President Bush signed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008 in August 2008; it goes into effect 2/10/09.
This was a response to the widely publicized toy recalls of 2007 and is intended to protect children from unsafe toys. It’s purpose is to limit the levels of lead and phathalates in all products made for children 12 years of age and under.
However the CPSIA has some unintended consequences; it does not just regulate toys, it regulates ALL products for children 12 years and under (Clothing, furniture, books, bicycles etc)
If the CPSIA stands as written, after February 10, 2009:
Resale stores will no longer be able to accept or sell children’s products
There will be no resale children’s products available for the public to purchase
Landfills will have the additional burden of items that normally would have been recycled.
2009 may be remembered as the year children’s resale died if Congress does not take immediate action!
